A BRIEF HISTORY OF
LODGE SIR JOSEPH BANKS No.300

WhERE we COME FROM;

Lodge Sir Joseph Banks No.300 was consecrated in September 1915, after a series of meetings between interested Freemasons from the Bankstown and nearby Districts. The United Grand Lodge of N.S.W. was petitioned and a Charter to operate as a Lodge meeting at Bankstown was issued and so this Lodge came into being. The name of the Lodge "Sir Joseph Banks" was chosen after great deliberation due to the fact that this renowned botanist and great companion of the founder of Australia, (Captain James Cook) is regarded as the first known Freemason to set foot in this country and his name is forever woven into the history of Australia.

Over the years the Lodge grew and prospered in numbers and following the War years a number of daughter Lodges were formed and sponsored by ‘Joeys’.

For almost eighty years we have maintained a close fraternal link with our South Coast Brethren from the Wollongong area, of Lodge Corrimal Thirroul Temperance (another very interesting story).

Our Temple the present Masonic Centre in Bankstown was erected in 1925 and Masonic meetings have been held there ever since ( except for a short period during WW2)

Who we are today;

The present day "Joeys", (we do still call ourselves that) is a thriving lodge with a very healthy mix of the long term masons that have worked long and hard to keep us alive and well, and those of us that have come to masonry over the last few years, whom bring with us a new dynamic and vigor. it is our role to take what our older brethren have built and take it forward from here.

We are a thriving and growing lodge with over 70 registered members, which gives us the ability to grow our brethren through Masonic life
